As school and activities are fully underway, I have found myself placing more and more papers in the well known “round file” at home. It’s easier to place the ever increasing flow of papers in the trash than actually work to review all the information with my kids whether that be school or church papers. Which has led me to the thought “If I, as a Children’s pastor, am throwing away papers from church how is anyone ever supposed to find the time to practically teach faith at home?!?” A podcast I recently listened to suggested 3 simple ways to weave faith-filled conversations into our everyday lives with the mantra: Time, Moments & Milestones.

1) Time - Start by setting aside a specified time in your week as a family to read your Bible, ask a few questions and pray together. This doesn’t have to be long (perhaps no more than 15 minutes!) but is a chance to model for and engage with your whole family how it looks to spend time in God’s word. Perhaps you will sing a worship song together or try memorizing a verse. Don’t stress about getting it perfect, just be intentional to set the time and keep trying different things to see what works best for your crew.

2) Moments - These are smaller moments throughout your day and week that you can point back to God. My family spent a lot of time in the garden this summer. We would marvel at the beauty of new life, the intricacy of God’s creation, as well as (because of the fall) the agony of pulling weeds! Lots and lots of weeds! Use these small moments to point back to God.

3) Milestones - Birthdays, baptisms, sports tournaments, and beyond! These are truly special times that you can specifically highlight your child and how special God has created them to be! Live these moments up and celebrate them!
